The ride

The Three Cities — Birgu, Senglea and Cospicua — are the old maritime heart of Malta, older than Valletta and far quieter than it. You trace the Grand Harbour from the Valletta side, ride around the head of Marsa creek, and then take the waterfronts of all three cities in turn with the harbour and the Valletta skyline on your shoulder the whole way. There is no real climbing on this route, but there is distance: the ride around the creek is what makes it a full loop. Take the Valletta–Three Cities ferry across instead and the same sights become a comfortable half day.

Terrain: Waterfront and city streets, gentle throughout, cobbles inside the fortified cities. The ride around Marsa creek is the long part. Suggested rental: full day, or half day using the harbour ferry.

Good to know: • The streets inside Birgu and Senglea are narrow and cobbled — ride slowly or walk the bike through. • The Valletta–Three Cities ferry takes bikes and cuts the loop roughly in half by skipping the ride around Marsa creek. • Ferry both ways and this fits the half-day rate comfortably; ride the full loop and take the day.
